The East Lake neighborhood of Atlanta, Ga. is home to The East Lake Foundation, which has developed programs that have started and linked key services for mixed income families in the community: Charles Drew Charter School, a K-8 (soon to be K-12) school, East Lake YMCA, Charlie Yates Public Golf Course, East Lake Private Golf Club, a farmer’s market and community garden.  The article, “Rich Kid, Poor Kid: How Mixed Neighborhoods Could Save America’s Schools” in The Atlantic discusses the community development and the impact it has had on the neighborhood’s charter school.

Middle School Matters: Improving the Life Course of Black Boys

Middle School Matters: Improving the Life Course of Black Boys is being held July 23-24. 2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The symposium will be held during the CDF’s “Pursuing Justice for Children and the Poor with Urgency and Persistence: A Community and Youth Empowerment Conference.” The symposium will focus on the research, strategies and community-building models aimed at changing the life condition of middle school Black boys in the U.S. education system.
